Using the Ballet Barre for Arm Exercises

Today was the last "Bingo Wings Be Gone" class and it was a blow-out. We started by wrapping Slastix bands around the ballet barre to do Pilates arm exercises like Chest Expansion, Salutes and Hugs. I stealthily (or not) took photos of some of the participants so you can see the set up.

In addition to using slastix, we did push ups against the ballet barre then single arm push aways on the wall. The ladies also used 5lb weights and continued their arm extravaganza on the rollers to keep their chests open while doing presses and triceps. Once they were done with the rollers, I had them all sit up and hold one weight while doing a teaser. They took the weight side to side then bent their knees and did half curls up and down with the weight going to the knees and over their heads.

We did side planks with weights, push ups and dips and of course great back extension/swans holding the bands. The bands were great as well to simulate the Pilates rowing series on the floor. A good time was had by all and I know they will feel the love tomorrow.

Next class series is "chairdevil" which is a chair challenge workout. Stay tuned.

Best Workout/Teaching Dresses for Pilates or Dance

As a Pilates instructor, it is hard to look stylish when your wardrobe has to be functional to demonstrate movement. One of my favorite ways to dress up my work look is to wear workout dresses. Here are my top three favorite designs:

1. The bamboo Morgan Dress from Omala (www.omala.com)

2. Zohba's Katharine Dress (www.zohba.com)

3. Stella McCartney Adidas Dresses

Throw on a cute cardigan over the dress and leggings or tights underneath and voila - you look fantastic and can still teach and move!
